Sketching is a way to connect your brain to your hand. It's a way to capture a deeper understanding of something, or to visually communicate or test an idea. The audience can be yourself or others. It can be done with an objective or with a free mind. As an architect, I sketch all the time with the objective of testing or sharing ideas. I'd have to admit that sketching with a free mind is something I do less often than I would like, or probably should. I was, however, able to get a few in last month on a family vacation and thought I would share the one I enjoyed the most.
